Question
I saw a clip where Rav Sternbuch paskened that a sick person should get better and the person got better. How exactly does this work? It sounds a little bit mystical to me and I would like to clarify the following issues:
1. What is the source for this practice?
2. Exactly how does this work?
3. Is this practice applicable in today’s day and age?
4. Are there other gedolim who agree with this approach?
Thank you.Y.K.
Rav SternbuchÂ
The Shach in Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh Deah 189) cites the Yerushalmi that if bais din is me’aber the month—i.e., an extra Adar is added—then children who turned three at the end of the month of Adar will revert back to being two, and any physical changes in their bodies that transpired as a result will go back to the way they were before.
As far as the question of how I know that this works today, the answer is that I have a mesorah from the Brisker Rov and Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer that this koach is not limited to bais din, but that a p’sak a posek issues today also has the ability to change the reality in this world.
In the particular case you mentioned, I was asked if it would be a miracle for a certain choleh to get better. After ten minutes of back-and-forth, I ruled that it would not be a miracle if he got better. Once that p’sak was issued, it was accepted in Shomayim that it was not a miracle, and it was therefore easier for the tefillos that were being offered on his behalf to be accepted.
